(product news) A recent shoreline restoration project at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., utilized a unique erosion control product from SOX Erosion Solutions that improves water quality, enhances the natural habitat and also makes the property safer for players and visitors alike. The product, DredgeSOX , is essentially a huge mesh sock filled with rich organic sedi-ment dredged from lake bottoms that is then secured to the shoreline to re-create the original shoreline as a living, breathing part of the ecosystem. According to the company, the key advantage of this product is that it allows course managers to naturally stabilize and restore the shoreline by attaching the product to the land and then planting and/or sodding directly through the mesh surface, establishing new rooted vegetation. It also serves as a filter for the surrounding waterways, preventing nitrates, phosphates and other pollutants from entering the water system. “Controlling and restoring eroding shorelines is an ongoing challenge at all golf courses,” says Andrew Kjos, CGCS, the director of agronomy at Trump International and a 19-year GCSAA member. “It is critical as we continually strive to create safe, picturesque experiences for our members and guests. We researched many strategies and found that the DredgeSOX system is environmen-tally preferable and easily installed as a long-term solution for erosion.” Approxi-mately 7,000 linear feet of DredgeSOX was installed at Trump International, and the entire process took about six weeks to complete. Not content to rest after last year’s Ryder Cup, the team at Le Golf National, just outside of Paris, is continuing to invest in its facilities, building a substantial new training area for short game practice. Located between the 16th green of the Albatros Course and the club’s driving range, the new short game area housed a large grandstand during the Ryder Cup. “When the stand came down after the event, all the grass in the area was dead, so it was clear we needed to do something with the ground,” says Lucas Pierré, Trump International (before) Trump International (during) Trump International (after) 88 GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT 11.19
