SILVER WINGS

ALWAYS SOMEWHAT overshadowed by gold, silver jewelry has been increasingly sought out by a growing number of jewelry buyers as the price of the yellow metal has surged to all-time highs. Nothing dramatic, mind you, but more than a quarter of the jewelers in our readers survey reported growth in the segment in the last year, while about half said their silver sales were stable.

OVERALL MARKET: How were your SILVER jewelry sales over the last 12 months?

REGIONAL BREAKDOWN

HOT PRODUCTS WITH THE BRAIN SQUAD

➤ Loose natural by dollars (only took one!). Ania Haie by units. Second-best sellers in both dollars and units were ladies colored gemstone rings, both original designs and purchased. Mark & Monika Clodius, Clodius & Co. Jewelers, Rockford, IL

➤ Colored gemstones in yellow gold. Betsy Barron, Love & Luxe, San Francisco, CA

➤ Bands from Uneek and from Imagine Designs — great price points and designs that are on trend. Elizabeth Saba, Presley Co. Fine Jewelers, San Diego, CA

➤ Our best-selling products were permanent jewelry, beaded bracelets, and religious medals. We continue to host and attend permanent jewelry events, which are becoming increasingly popular among families looking for gift ideas for their teen and tween children. Most of our charms, links, and chains are sourced from Stuller. Our beaded bracelets support a local charity, and we have recently released a Mother’s Day color, making them popular both in-store and online. We love working with Made as Intended. Beth Greene, Conti Jewelers, Endwell, NY

➤ Mined diamonds led the way for us in terms of revenue, which is great to see, with wedding bands close behind. I guess it’s that time of year! Jeff Markman, Markman’s Diamonds, Knoxville, TN

➤ Engagement rings with hidden halos. Nine out of 10 lab-grown diamonds with 2.5- to 4-carat center stones, rectangular radiant, princess cut and oval center stones. Diamond stud earrings 1 to 2 carats each. Atalie Finer, Finer Jewelry, Chicago, IL

Bassali Jewelry Miranda Collection 14K gold earrings hand-set with turquoise, $1,890, bassalijewelry.com

“Bassali Jewelry is a great collection — fashion-forward and well-designed to support self-purchase to statement pieces!” HEATHER WAHL, R.C. WAHL JEWELERS, DES PLAINES, IL

➤ Lab diamonds, lab diamonds, lab diamonds. A lot of custom and repairs. John Przeclawski, Monarch Jewelry, Winter Park, FL

➤ Gabriel & Co., Allison-Kaufman, and our estate collection. They are almost always our best sellers. Cindy Stafford, Wades Jewelers, Southport, NC

➤ Custom lab-grown diamonds from M. Geller in cool east/west designs and a lot of platinum. Also, basic men’s wedding bands from Stuller and custom lab diamond bands from us. Beth Cevasco, Scott’s Custom Jewelers, Dublin, OH

➤ Four things.1. Fire and Ice jewelry because we purchased a large amount as a closeout, passing huge savings on to our customers. 2. Lab-grown diamonds, mostly as center diamonds for engagement rings. 3. A. Jaffe semis set with lab centers. They support us like no other vendor. 4. Custom sales. We have an award-winning CAD designer on staff who makes amazing pieces and knows how to close a deal. Jim Carroll, Rogers Jewelry, Modesto, CA

➤ Custom-made. Why? We are good at it. Susan Maxon, Honors Gran, Dunedin, FL

➤ Our watch department had a big month, and we sold some really nice bridal pieces. And the ruby and diamond bracelet from JB Star was the icing on the cake. Marc Majors, Sam L. Majors, Midland, TX

➤ Hearts on Fire diamond fashion jewelry — we had a lot of anniversaries celebrated in March, and what better way to say happy anniversary than with Hearts on Fire? We also had a great month with Lagos; their Spark and Luxe collections sold the best. I think everyone needed a little extra diamond sparkle in their lives to get over the cold weather funk. Estate jewelry has always been our best-selling category, and we certainly bought a lot of great pieces with the gold prices up so high. No shortage of inventory coming through the doors. Josh Perry, Perry’s Emporium, Wilmington, NC

➤ Citizen watches and custom work. Lots of repairs! Tim Wright, Simply Unique Jewelry Designs, Yorktown, VA

➤ Naledi bridal, Seiko automatic watches, and new Ania Haie all seem to be doing really well. Trevor Williams, Leitzel’s Jewelry, Myerstown, PA
